The 4 T’s – Tools (Part 2 of 4)

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

The second T: Tools

“Put me in a room with a nail, a board, and a screwdriver and I’ll get the nail in the board, it might take a while and I might be very pissed off when I come out, but the nail will be in the board.” -J. Edward Goodwin

The first T (time) anyone can make, shift time away from another activity, or two, and you can find the time for just about anything in your day or week. The next T (Tools) takes another level of commitment to the task. For example, if I want to start doing my own tune-ups, fix a toilet, or start building “whirlygigs” to decorate the yard. I can’t just set aside the time to do it, I have to pull together a collection of tools to do the job. But, not just any tools; the right tools.

The mark of a professional tradesman or an artist is his toolbox. While I shop at Home Depot, the pros use Snap-On or MacTools. They cost more and they are more specialized. Sometimes us home handymen can get away with a tool that’s close, but a pro has a specific tool for each job. The more he does the job the more efficient he becomes with the tool.

The same applies to our dealings with family and others. Every day we are faced with a job to do, listen, encourage, correct, get into the word, spend time listening to God. There are tools that have to be used often to make us efficient and able to cope with life, avoid problems, and fix stuff when it brakes. Your spouse won’t feel heard if you’re doing something else while she’s talking. You’re kids will feel unimportant if you aren’t making an effort to see there point of view, or investing in their education or guiding them in their interpersonal relationships. “Because, I said so,” is like beating on a watch with a mallet, If you bring the hammer out to fix every issue the only thing you fix is that they won’t bother you with their questions anymore. They’ll go elsewhere for the answers.

And its not just with family issues, all the things that come up with people are just attacks from the enemy to get us to fly off the handle or just sit on the couch and let the tools rust in the shed. Here’s the verse for this one:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

Question: How do the right “tools,” physical and figurative make a difference with the jobs put in front of us?

Next: The only difference between you and Tiger Woods is the tools, right…?

The 4 T’s (Part 1: Time)

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

I could share them all in one post but I’m going to go through them one at a time to build suspense and emphasis. I’m nothing if not blunt.

The first T is “Time.”

For any job or endeavor the proper time must be set aside to finish. Rushing against a clock is the first enemy of the craftsman. Haste indeed makes waste, but planning, mapping, and study builds a masterpiece.

Setting expectations: Tell a client that you’ll be finished by noon and see how they respond when you haven’t finished by 2. Tell your wife you’ll spend the afternoon with her and then spend too long browsing at Home Depot. Start tuning up your truck with two hours before you’re supposed to be on a date. If you haven’t set aside the proper amount of time for the job to get done, or you’ve given someone else an expectation of time and you don’t deliver the outcome is frustration.

When my wife and I decided to host a small group in our home we thought all we had to do was post it on the church’s website and people would be lining up in the street. We didn’t see any interest for 3 months. But we pushed on through the dip of discouragement and found some of our closest friends.

There will come a time when you’ll feel as though God has told you to do something, or to follow a path, or to love the unloveable, or to do nothing and wait. Then a time will come right after that when you decide to take him at his word and follow through on the task. Then next another time will come when you don’t get the result you thought you would so you don’t want to become frustrated and quit you’ll have to reset your expectation of the time it will take to get the job done and commit to God’s timetable on the matter. “No matter how long it takes I will see it through.” And then the time right after that… that’s called freedom, my friend.

Blue Like Jazz

Monday, May 12th, 2008

by Donald Miller

Book Blue like Jazz

I finally did it, I finished a book in a week, so it was the abridged audio version, its still a book and I “read” it in a week.

Donald Miller does a great job of giving words to the feelings that somethings just aren’t right with the morays we’ve been given in the church. He opens your eyes to a world of beautiful people that don’t care about your new easter suit, they want to know if they are important enough for you to love, care about, invest in, or simply listen too.

If the modern church / “christian” is ever going to relevant to a secular world we have to stop acting like anyone who doesn’t think like us has a disease. Stop fighting about politics and start helping people downtown. Stop hanging out with the “saints” and start doing life with the “sinners”

If you’ve ever left a church service of a “traditional” church and felt like if you repeated what you just heard in the “real world” you’d be thought a freak. Then read this book and it will tell you why. Christians have a bad rep in this world because we’ve been a huge part in alienating it.

Donald doesn’t preach at anyone, he relates life through stories of interesting characters and then leaves you to form your opinion.

Blue Like Jazz conveys love and logic, but mostly love.

What is and How to: RSS Feeds

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Subscribe to RSS Feeds: Save yourself some time and improve the readership numbers on your favorite site.RSS logo

What is this logo and why do you care? This logo is a sign that you can keep up with the site’s content without having to go to the site to check for updates. Let’s say you read 3 personal blogs, keep up with your favorite sports team game results, and read a certain section of a news site everyday. RSS can bring any updates from those sites to you instead of you having to go to each of those sites. You can get the headlines or read the whole article without having to actually visit the website. There is no account needed or any personal information gathered. The programs used to collect the information being “broadcast” is called an aggregator it means “to gather in mass.” Just like you can get your email on the web (webmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, etc) or with a program installed on your local computer (Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird) you can have an online or local aggregator.

Here’s a video that explains the process, then ask your favorite nerd for more help.

A site that explains it better than I: Feed 101 h

A list of known RSS aggregators

I use my iGoogle account so I see all my headlines on my google homepage when I open my browser and when I click on an RSS feed icon I get the option to add it. Here’s a video of me subscribing to this page’s feed: rssvid

Boot Camp Kickoff

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Tomorrow night, Tuesday May 13th, will be the second meeting for the OKC Wild at Heart Boot Camp team. We had three sign up during the Warrior series at Lifechurch. Add that to the two other men and we’ve got six of us now. We still need some prayer warriors so if you feel like you can commit to praying for the group we could sure use it, use the contact form to let me know. And if you’ve been given some freedom through the Wild at Heart message and would like to participate use the contact form to get in touch.

We’ll be taking the rest of this year to prepare, gather equipment, find a venue, and sort out the details and God willing we’ll be holding our first event by next spring. Sooner if all the pieces come together, but this is one thing that doesn’t need to be rushed.

For Freedom.

Edit (tuesday night): God is good,  two men showed, the three of us had some great conversation about the message, life, and getting some other guys involved. I love this story.
