Resources contined

Hopefully you sensed my passion for recovery in the first post.  This will be a short one because I want to share with you how God works in my life.

I have been forming this series of posts for about a month now and God has been bringing new insights and confirmations every day (even on bad days).

Today I received my Daily Eldredge email and it gave insight into addiction:

Whatever the object of our addiction is, it attaches itself to our intense desire for eternal and intimate communion with God and each other in the midst of Paradise—the desire that Jesus himself placed in us before the beginning of the world. Nothing less than this kind of unfallen communion will ever satisfy our desire or allow it to drink freely without imprisoning it and us. Once we allow our heart to drink water from these less-than-eternal wells with the goal of finding the life we were made for, it overpowers our will, and becomes, as Jonathan Edwards said, “like a viper, hissing and spitting at God” and us if we try to restrain it. . . “Addiction is the most powerful psychic enemy of humanity’s desire for God,” says Gerald May in Addiction and Grace, which is no doubt why it is one of our adversary’s favorite ways to imprison us. Once taken captive, trying to free ourselves through willpower is futile. Only God’s Spirit himself can free us or even bring us to our senses.  (The Sacred Romance , 133–34.  John Eldredge)

This is where we will be going in our path to freedom . . . God.

Resources for recovery

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

trail to recoveryIt seems everywhere I look and listen lately I hear stories of men and women living in painful addictions to lust. Be it porn, infidelity, sexual abuse, anger, same sex attractions, fantasies or even seeking to up their value as a person through non-sexual intimate relationships.  Be there, done that, still dealing with on some levels and definitely dealing with the consequences of my choices.  Just a few examples:

  • The Daily Audio Bible plays phone calls of people asking for prayer requests from the community.  At least 3 different men have called in over the past few weeks to share of their struggles with pornography & masturbation (see #lust).
  • This article in Today’s Christian Woman on women sharing their stories of internet porn addiction (#lust)
  • I could go on and on, but I’m sure you’ve heard them too.

I’m sorry to say that there is not a magical set of principals that you can follow that will fix this addiction. Sure you can put an internet filter and accountability software on all the computers you use (I definitely recommend this. You can find more information on the “Content Filters” section of this site), you can meet regularly with an accountability partner (assuming you’re gonna drop your pride, take a real risk and be really honest with what’s going on in you), read a book, go to sites like xxxChurch, read blogs and promise yourself you will never do it again.  These are all really good things!   You will most likely have some success, even “sobriety” for a time.  But it will not last.

Why?   Why don’t these strategies work long term?  Everything mentioned to this point are behavioral, they don’t attack the real problem in our hearts in our wounds.  We all have issues (problems, ways of looking at the world, etc) that have brought us to this point and have led us to be a lustful person rather than a loving person.  You must have been wondering earlier why the “#lust” tag on the end of statements.  Because lust isn’t just a thing that we do, it’s a way we begin to see our world, that leads us to our choices.

I want real freedom, if you are reading this, I assume you are looking for a way out . . . a way to freedom.  To find that way we need to take off the glasses we have used to perceive the world (#lust, #wounds, #issues), so we can begin to see what the Creator really meant when He created us and, in that, begin to see the path to freedom.

“Where are the resources?” you may ask and you are correct to do so – but it isn’t as simple as a few (or even a hundred) things you can read, listen to or meditate on.   In my next installment I will begin to share some of the resources that have helped me in my struggles to take off the glasses I’ve built and some of the pitfalls I’ve experienced along the way.

Guy’s Guide to Marrying Well

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

There is a *free* guide for men to marry well.  I’m not sure how many single guys are readers of MoP, but I am sure you will be happy to pass on this information that can help prepare men for strong, health marriages.

Most men hope to marry some day, but there’s no guarantee they will.  Increasingly, young men are — as one writer put it — “stumbling on to the altar as if by accident.”  … When they do find advice about relationships, it’s often spectacularly bad.

This guide was developed to turn around the curse of failed manhood.  In their infinite wisdom, the authors have opted to GIVE this information away.  So get over to Guy’s Guide to Marrying Well and sign up to break the curse of apathy among men and marriage.

Election Day – What Stirs You? (part 2)

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

With today being the election day I thought it a good time to post something political in nature.  Check out this speech by Laurence White entitled “Soul of America”

Laurence White has been the senior pastor at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas, since 1981. He is the co-founder and chairman of the Greater Houston Area Pastor’s Roundtable, a pro-life, pro-family organization that seeks to increase Christian participation in the political arena.

Crap called Gospel – What Stirs You? (part 1)

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

This is the first of a number of posts that asks, “What stirs you?”  I will post about issues that stir me and/or those close to me.

“Why?” you may ask.  I am sure that when we find the things that stir us we begin to come Fully Alive and begin to find out who God made us to be.

A Bunch of Crap Called Gospel

The prosperity gospel is an issue that stirs me.  Watch the video below…

Church Think

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

When I first moved to Colorado Springs one of the volunteer youth leaders introduced me to Enter the Worship Circle, an album of post-modern acoustic worship music – I loved it!  A few weeks after that I had lunch with a friend who had just moved to Denver and he wanted to introduce me to some musician friends of his that were set up close to my office.  Turns out his friends were Ben and Robin Pasley of 100 Portraits, the people heading up Enter the Worship Circle.

While I wasn’t in the “Springs” long enough to really get to know Ben and Robin in person, I have gotten to know them through the years through their music, writings, videos and most recently through ChurchThink.

ChurchThink is Ben’s blog where he engages ideas about the people of God though sharing his personal studies/revelations in articles and then a discussion based podcast.

Here are a few excerpts from one of his articles/podcasts

Try and win people to Christ through the dissemination of correct
thinking and what do you get? A bunch of people fighting and killing
each other over what is really right in the name of the God.

Try to win people to Christ through fancy events and amazement and
what will you get? A group of folks so obsessed with public events and
the vibration of experience that relationships are blindly burned and
left on the highway to the next “revival.”

Try to win people to Christ through a message of justice and social
reform and what do you get? Folks who see better and know better than
everyone else, who constantly apologize for God and his people, and
divide the world into “for us” and “against us” on the fields of their
cause.

BUT…

And another:

If you go and tell somebody that the end game of your Christian walk is to believe the right thing and to go to a building – then I’d have to say there’s less than something perfectly romantic and attractive about that.

And Another:

… asking the same old tired questions, you know, “where do you go to church?”  Good Lord, are you kidding me?  Are you still doing that?  Is that the end game for you – is going to this place where people are seated in a building while some body is teaching?

There are so many tasks we men put on our “to do” lists, but there is one that should trump that list:  To be knowing God, to chase after Him with more abandon than we chase after carreer, stuff, fun, or even the girl.

This blog/Podcast (blog-cast?) is a tool that should be added to your arsenal as you seek to grow in relationship with God and in the family of God.

I encourage you to be challenged at www.churchthink.com.

Defeated . . .

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

I listen to a number of podcasts as I commute to work on my bicycle. Sometimes I forget where I am and I have to go back and listen to the entry from the beginning – two or three times – just to make sure I did hear it correctly.

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

- 2 Corinthians 4:8-10

This was the key verse in a sermon on Resilience (this is a direct link to the MP3) at Mosaic.

I was caught by this verse from the very beginning because I so often think on just these things…

I am pressed on every side . . .

I  am perplexed . . .

I am persecuted . . .

I am struck down . . .

I am defeated . . .

Whoa!! Is that really how I see my life? Not always, but quite often, it is. I must have a pretty hard life right? Obviously, I don’t have a job or any means to provide for my family . . . what family, they’ve all betrayed me . . . I don’t even know why all this bad stuff happens to me…

What I just said is not true: I have a good job that allows me to provide for my wonderful wife and amazing four children whom I get to play with and share with most every day. I have a few great friends. Is everything peachy? No, of course not, I live in the same fallen world as everyone else.

It really comes down to where I focus. Do I focus on the “bad deal” I’ve gotten or do I focus on the “amazing gifts” I’ve been given? Do I focus on what I can’t do or on what God is doing?

With that slight change in attitude I find:

I am NOT crushed . . .

I am NOT in despair . . .

I am NOT abandoned . . .

I am NOT Destroyed . . .

I am NOT defeated . . .

Even through all of the pain and hardness of life I have victory because of Christ and even more. I have the privilege of carrying Christ crucified to the world, to all those within my sphere and even to be part of the “reveal” of Christ to those same people.

Not a bad deal if you ask me!

Mosaic is the church community where Erwin McManus (author of Soul Cravings & The Barbarian Way) serves as the primary communicator and cultural architect.

Mosaic is a community of followers of Jesus Christ, committed to live by faith, to be known by love, and to be a voice of hope. Most of their sermons are available through their podcasts along with many of their innovative videos.

Man 2 Man

Friday, September 5th, 2008

From Bert: Its a Big Day here at the MoP!! If you pay very close attention you’ll see the new by-line above. Noel is a close friend and very large reason MenOnPurpose is what it is today. Without his encouragement I don’t think I’d have stuck with it this long. Which is why it gives me great pleasure to introduce him as a contributing member of the cast. (With Noel as an author the readership just dropped by a 10th, hopefully his contribution will attract / appeal to a larger audience.) Glad to have you here brother! Everyone, welcome Noel.

Man 2 Man

by Noel

One of the purposes of MenOnPurpose.com is to provide tools to encourage men in their daily walk; real-time information.  As I come across podcasts, vidcasts, articles or blog posts I will do my best to get them to you in a timely manor.

I caught a couple of great podcasts from Focus on the Family this week.   The September 3rd and 4th shows featured Gordon Dalbey speaking on “Healing the Masculine Soul: How God Restores Men to Real Manhood.  I found the discussion encouraging and thought provoking.  The content is similar to Wild at Heart with a slightly different take.  You can surf over to the Daily Broadcast archives and give the shows a listen as well as check out some additional content:

or you can fire up itunes and search the podcast directory for Focus on the Family Daily Broadcast (yes, I had to break down and use the “i”).

Gordon Dalbey is an author and a conference speaker who has addressed audiences around the world. His books include Healing the Masculine Soul, Sons of the Father and Fight Like a Man. Gordon holds an M.Div from Harvard, an M.A. in journalism from Stanford and a B.A. in mathematics from Duke. He and his wife reside in California.  You can learn more about Gordan’s ministry at AbbaFather.com
