Independence Day

Friday, July 4th, 2008

First of all:

Welcome Home All Who Have Served Our Country, You Are the Warriors We All Hope to Emulate in Our Battles!

The theme of this day (July 4th, US independence day) fits the message of this site perfectly. There is an enemy, he prowls the earth seeking whom he may devour. That ‘may’ there is a good choice of words. He doesn’t devour just anyone, he destroys those willing to be destroyed. Not whom he ‘can’ devour but those who he ‘may’ devour.

Before the enemy came to be there is a Father/Creator that spoke us into existence. To each he gave a personality, desires, and  a purpose. And, because he knew what he was doing the three of those things mesh together to form a fierce being. A man (in our case) who is focused, brave, valiant, and effective. That was the plan anyhow.

The way things have turned out we have blindly stumbled through life without anyone to point us in the direction of that loving creator Father. We were told that the purpose of life is to be happy, or prosperous, or at the very least “to have it better than our parents had it.” Hmm, lofty. Our parents, church leaders, teachers etc. didn’t know the purpose of life and if they did then they didn’t know how to point us to it. We went to high school and cruised through, some of us went to college and wasted even more time. Then we got out and had to pay rent so we took the job that paid the bills and had to learn how to survive the politics to advance and get paid more. At some point we concluded that having a family, a house, and a car was the best we could do and started filling the holes with toys. A big TV, turned into a Theater Room, Going to a football game turned into tailgating with an RV and a margarita machine, A weekend trip to the lake turned into a boat, a ski-doo, and a lake house. Going to church turned into commitee meetings, building projects, fund raisers, choir practice, gossip,  and “where are we going to eat after the service?” All the while we watch the news and feel helpless to change the world. I wonder why we feel helpless when WE’RE NOT DOING ANYTHING TO CHANGE IT.

Going forward, here at Men On Purpose, I’m going to be looking at who we are, why we were put here, and the distractions that keep us resigned to a life of futility. I want to talk frankly about these issues, and invite you to do the same. Use words like ‘angry,’ ‘drunk,’ ‘pot,’ ‘depressed,’ ‘porn,’ ‘masturbate,’ ‘afair,’ ‘guilt,’ and ‘divorce.’ These topics touch our lives and skew our perspective, if the church hides in the closet and ignores them then no one gets helped. You can’t drive forward if your wheels are spinning in the mud.

Philippians 3: 13 Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. 14 I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back. 15 So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision—you’ll see it yet! 16 Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it. 17 Stick with me, friends. Keep track of those you see running this same course, headed for this same goal. 18 There are many out there taking other paths, choosing other goals, and trying to get you to go along with them. I’ve warned you of them many times; sadly, I’m having to do it again. All they want is easy street. They hate Christ’s Cross. 19 But easy street is a dead-end street. Those who live there make their bellies their gods; belches are their praise; all they can think of is their appetites. 20 But there’s far more to life for us. We’re citizens of high heaven! –The Message

We’re About to go “Dark”

Friday, June 13th, 2008

There is a need in the community of men that is slightly different than what menonpurpose.com has been doing. My goals up until now have been to: “Use positive language to encourage men to find their place in the “Bigger” story that God has for them.” It has come to my attention over the last couple of weeks that I’ve been a little to… (what’s the word?)… hesitant  when dealing with the real and overwhelming issues that are facing men.  In the next couple of days this site will go “dark.” There will be a home page with an invitation and a  warning that we are going to tackle issues with honest, meaningful, relevant, and often frank language.

Its about to get REAL men.

Vision Casting: One Prayer

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Finally there is something “Christians” do that sounds cool. When I hear the term “Vision Casting” I think of the Native American practice of going on a “Vision Quest.” The result of Vision Casting isn’t that much different but you don’t have to go through all that living in the desert stuff that can be uncomfortable. In the end you are confronted with purpose and a direction to steer it. And, if you’ve never heard Craig Groeschel cast a vision for direction you’ve missed out. Craig is a good teacher, its one of the reasons I wanted to keep going to Lifechurch but when he gets passionate about something it tends to have world-wide ramifications. Take, for example, OnePrayer.com.  If you have ever wondered why we need all those denominations and 25 churches of the same type in every city and how absurd that is and what can be done about “Christian” unity, then go read the mission of One Prayer.

Just to illustrate how far ahead of the curve I was in 1995, I wrote a paper for my “Religion in Contemporary Culture” class, it was called “Denominational Reunification.” I was very impressed with the title and the grade I got on the paper. But it stopped there. Here is what can be, hundreds of churches and thousands of believers world wide worshiping and battling together to serve the rest of creation.

Here’s a link to last weeks “experience.” The illustrations of Jesus’ prayer near the end is Incredibly powerful.

Go to One Prayer.com and join the conversation…

The 4 T’s – Testicles (part 4 of 4)

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

Every man’s got em, not every man uses em.

I don’t mean the literal appendages, I mean as in nerve, huevos, “to Cowboy Up,” pull the trigger, time to Man up, step off the cliff…

Risk is a part of life, the opposite of taking a risk is not being conservative, it is resignation. To be resigned to a life of uselessness (or “impotence”) Our language for being courageous is built around our most sensitive part. The part you want to protect at all cost. Ironically it is the pain that we try to avoid that has to be risked in order to achieve great strides.

There are two ways that courage manifests itself these days. Not all of us are faced with babies in burning buildings or going toe to toe with a bad guy at a crime scene. But, we do have choices to make about our purpose and battling for those who can’t/shouldn’t have to defend themselves.

Purpose

Are you doing what you love, what you were born to do? Or, have you resigned yourself to the lie that this is as good as it gets you might as well work like a dog and ache for the weekend to get here. Its funny, the resigned life is hard to live but easy to fall in to. And the purposeful life is hard to get into and easier to live in.

There is a parable in Matthew 25 that tells of a ruler who goes on a trip and entrusts some money to 3 of his workers. While he is away, the first invests the money and doubles it. The second does the same, the third hides the money and waits for the master to return. Here’s what the third guy says:

25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’ 26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! … 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. 28 ”Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents… 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness

“I was afraid” he says, that’s code for, “I didn’t have the stones to take a risk”

Battles

I was in a fast food joint not long ago when I overheard an old man berating the teenage girl behind the counter. He was an old dude but he was using his position as a customer to talk down to the girl that didn’t know about their “senior” menu. He kept on shouting at her about being overcharged for his drink. I told my wife to hand me a dollar and I went to the counter to pay the overcharge. He wouldn’t let me and turned his argument to me. Excellent. This is what I wanted to prove to her. She didn’t deserve this treatment and a stranger thought enough of her to deflect the abuse. I was then able to tell the man that he was acting inappropriately and he was shamed into not talking to the girl anymore.

There are battles to be fought all around us. There could be tendency to make mountains out of mole hills in an effort to look like you’re fighting for truth and justice but I always weigh the situation from two sides. Justice and Grace. Some people have a keen sense of justice while others live with an acute sense of grace. If someone is abusing both at the same time, its time to step in.

I am very good at fighting for people who I don’t think can fight for themselves, I sometimes step over the line but I don’t see that as being too bad. I do however have a huge problem pulling the trigger on taking a risk. I know I’m not doing what I was put here to do and if I’d just step off the cliff I’d be rewarded but, I wait and take baby steps and hope one day God will push me off the cliff so I don’t have to make the decision. God give me strength to trust you.

If you don’t think this is a serious issue in the life of a man, try this on for size: Rev 21:8

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.

Check out who leads this list of people heading to “the second death.”

So, I guess my advice to myself is to, “grow a pair.”

The 4 T’s – Talent (Part 3 of 4)

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

The third T: Talent

When asked the secret to his success as a one of the best pitchers to ever play the game of baseball, Nolan Ryan didn’t give credit to genetics, or “clean livin.” He simply said “technique.” He never forgot the basics and he studied how he could consistently repeat a desired outcome. Shaqule O’neal may not be the best free-throw shooter in the NBA but I bet he out performs me based on the fact that he shoots more free-throws than I do. And, if you want to be like the pros and drive a nail in one swing of the hammer, you have to pound a lot of nails.

I have a good friend has taught me that anyone can do anything they just haven’t learned how yet. Will gets an idea that he’d like to do something, like – say a strip wood canoe. I’d known him, at this point for 8 years and I didn’t even know if the kid had ever been on the water. But he had a policy, he would read 3 books on the subject, buy the materials and start working. The process wouldn’t be perfect but he kept working at it until he had his canoe and a new set of skills to take to the next job.

2 Timothy 2:15
Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The 4 T’s – Tools (Part 2 of 4)

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

The second T: Tools

“Put me in a room with a nail, a board, and a screwdriver and I’ll get the nail in the board, it might take a while and I might be very pissed off when I come out, but the nail will be in the board.” -J. Edward Goodwin

The first T (time) anyone can make, shift time away from another activity, or two, and you can find the time for just about anything in your day or week. The next T (Tools) takes another level of commitment to the task. For example, if I want to start doing my own tune-ups, fix a toilet, or start building “whirlygigs” to decorate the yard. I can’t just set aside the time to do it, I have to pull together a collection of tools to do the job. But, not just any tools; the right tools.

The mark of a professional tradesman or an artist is his toolbox. While I shop at Home Depot, the pros use Snap-On or MacTools. They cost more and they are more specialized. Sometimes us home handymen can get away with a tool that’s close, but a pro has a specific tool for each job. The more he does the job the more efficient he becomes with the tool.

The same applies to our dealings with family and others. Every day we are faced with a job to do, listen, encourage, correct, get into the word, spend time listening to God. There are tools that have to be used often to make us efficient and able to cope with life, avoid problems, and fix stuff when it brakes. Your spouse won’t feel heard if you’re doing something else while she’s talking. You’re kids will feel unimportant if you aren’t making an effort to see there point of view, or investing in their education or guiding them in their interpersonal relationships. “Because, I said so,” is like beating on a watch with a mallet, If you bring the hammer out to fix every issue the only thing you fix is that they won’t bother you with their questions anymore. They’ll go elsewhere for the answers.

And its not just with family issues, all the things that come up with people are just attacks from the enemy to get us to fly off the handle or just sit on the couch and let the tools rust in the shed. Here’s the verse for this one:

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)

Question: How do the right “tools,” physical and figurative make a difference with the jobs put in front of us?

Next: The only difference between you and Tiger Woods is the tools, right…?

The 4 T’s (Part 1: Time)

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

A wise sage once shared with me the secret to being a stress free man, he said every job requires– The Four T’s.

I could share them all in one post but I’m going to go through them one at a time to build suspense and emphasis. I’m nothing if not blunt.

The first T is “Time.”

For any job or endeavor the proper time must be set aside to finish. Rushing against a clock is the first enemy of the craftsman. Haste indeed makes waste, but planning, mapping, and study builds a masterpiece.

Setting expectations: Tell a client that you’ll be finished by noon and see how they respond when you haven’t finished by 2. Tell your wife you’ll spend the afternoon with her and then spend too long browsing at Home Depot. Start tuning up your truck with two hours before you’re supposed to be on a date. If you haven’t set aside the proper amount of time for the job to get done, or you’ve given someone else an expectation of time and you don’t deliver the outcome is frustration.

When my wife and I decided to host a small group in our home we thought all we had to do was post it on the church’s website and people would be lining up in the street. We didn’t see any interest for 3 months. But we pushed on through the dip of discouragement and found some of our closest friends.

There will come a time when you’ll feel as though God has told you to do something, or to follow a path, or to love the unloveable, or to do nothing and wait. Then a time will come right after that when you decide to take him at his word and follow through on the task. Then next another time will come when you don’t get the result you thought you would so you don’t want to become frustrated and quit you’ll have to reset your expectation of the time it will take to get the job done and commit to God’s timetable on the matter. “No matter how long it takes I will see it through.” And then the time right after that… that’s called freedom, my friend.

Blue Like Jazz

Monday, May 12th, 2008

by Donald Miller

Book Blue like Jazz

I finally did it, I finished a book in a week, so it was the abridged audio version, its still a book and I “read” it in a week.

Donald Miller does a great job of giving words to the feelings that somethings just aren’t right with the morays we’ve been given in the church. He opens your eyes to a world of beautiful people that don’t care about your new easter suit, they want to know if they are important enough for you to love, care about, invest in, or simply listen too.

If the modern church / “christian” is ever going to relevant to a secular world we have to stop acting like anyone who doesn’t think like us has a disease. Stop fighting about politics and start helping people downtown. Stop hanging out with the “saints” and start doing life with the “sinners”

If you’ve ever left a church service of a “traditional” church and felt like if you repeated what you just heard in the “real world” you’d be thought a freak. Then read this book and it will tell you why. Christians have a bad rep in this world because we’ve been a huge part in alienating it.

Donald doesn’t preach at anyone, he relates life through stories of interesting characters and then leaves you to form your opinion.

Blue Like Jazz conveys love and logic, but mostly love.

Titus: Leadership 101

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’ve been searching everywhere for an accessible (cheap) study or resource on leadership. Needless to say I don’t have the best “quiet time” discipline. Today, up earlier than normal I made coffee and sat at my desk with Eugene Peterson’s “The Message” in front of me. I have zero luck at picking good scripture to read, and not thinking about the leadership subject, I said a quick, hopefull, incomplete prayer to read something I needed. The spine of this particular bible is broken in Titus so I started reading Paul’s words to him. “I left you in charge… so you could complete what I left halfdone.”

Imagine that a book on leadership, one mentor speaking encouragement to his charge. The main themes expressed were how to:

  • Pick good leaders
  • Encourage the church to live to a higher standard
  • God is ready for us to spread the word of Salvation available to everyone
  • Calm rebellious uprisings

Chapter 3 “It wasn’t so long ago that we ourselves were stupid and stuborn dupes of sin, ordered every which way by our glands, going around with a chip on our shoulder, hated and hating back.” Sounds like ignorance, lust, and anger issues, how relevant is that? “But when God, our kind and loving Savior God, stepped in, he saved us from all that. It was all his doing.”

Remember: God picked a man with your personality and skill set, you for this fight. Fight well and fight all the way through. And remember to stretch first, you don’t want to pull anything.

My Turn to Jump on the ‘Green’ Bandwagon

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Being “green’ ain’t easy. You have to think about the products you buy and the trash you make, and take an inventory of the resources you consume. Then go a step further and consider the products, trash, and resources used by the manufacturers of your products and resources. It can get to be very time consuming.

On the Debate:

(This is not the point of this post, this paragraph is to give my perspective, hopefully it will make the point a little more pointed.) I’ve read the end of the story and I don’t see world ending because of too much of the wrong gas in the air. And, I know it won’t end because of flooding (caused by the melting of the ice caps). I know this because the world has been flooded before and there was a promise made to us by God that he wouldn’t destroy the earth again by flood. rb.jpgGenesis 9:13 “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” I personally don’t think man has the ability to destroy this ear th. As for research in the area of climate change, their are as many “experts” on both sides of the issue. Some say the ice caps are melting, others say they are growing. Some say the temperature of the earth is rising and just as many say it is falling. And, I seriously doubt that Al Gore has some inside track on the subject, just a lot of free time and a need to be relevant in some way. Regardless of the side of the debate on which you fall, the story ends the same. Rev. 21:1 “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had passed away.”

Its a Matter of Resources:

(Here’s the point) I’m no tree hugger that’s for dang sure. For me, environmentalism is another matter altogether, a more tangible, less debatable matter of stewardship. Simply put, if I reduce the money I spend on my utilities then I can use that money in more productive areas.

I want to be off the grid. I want one of those houses that is heated and cooled passively but the sun and earth where rain is collected and used for watering the garden and grey water for the house. I’d love to go solar but that is way to expensive and building a wind generator is a close second in cost. We have an old drafty house. We spend a ton of money heating and cooling it. Before you think we go overboard the heat gets set on 62 and the air gets set around 78. I would love to seal the place up and we are trying. We both drive a lot, I traded my V8 for a V6 and we have no car payments. Other options may be an old diesel or a scooter but you can’t put a scooter on the highway. Maybe later when we’re in a better money position doing some of those things might be possible but for now we cut as many corners as we can and try to reduce what we use and reward manufactures that do the same.

Does anyone know of a practical DIY solar project or wind project or good ways to reduce dependence on the utilities or oil companies? I’ve searched online but a lot of the solutions are jankey at best. Maybe we can get together as a group and help each other find ways to lower our utility bills and reclaim some hard earned bucks.

As always, for freedom!
