Jesus Loves You this I know, By Craig Gross and Jason Harper

Jesus Loves You This I Know: Craig Gross & Jason Harper

I had this crazy Christian roommate in college named Ethan. One night while I was diligently studying, as I was oft to do, he busts through the door to our room and shouts, “Hey, you’ve got some sandwich stuff in the fridge, right?” all loud and out of breath like he’d just run all the way home starving.
“Sure.” I said.
So, he makes the sandwich and heads for the door. “Hey, where are you going?” I asked.
“Oh, its not for me, its for this homeless guy outside.”
I was pissed. Ethan was welcome to it but not some homeless guy outside. Its been 14 years and I’m not sure if I’ve learned my lesson yet.

Oh, I know what the lesson is, and I can tell you why I should have gotten up and gone with him but I didn’t. The whole point of this “Life” thing is love. Most of us stop at God’s message of forgiveness and miss that His goal- the reason he had to forgive us- is to connect with us. For Him to love us and for us to love Him, and in turn, each other.

As the “Church” when there are discrepancies between what we preach and the way we act – what I mean is, when we say “Jesus loves you,” but then we ACT LIKE JERKS, CUT PEOPLE OFF IN TRAFFIC WITH A JESUS FISH ON THE BUMPER, AND DON’T LEAVE A DECENT TIP AT SUNDAY LUNCH FOR THE SINGLE MOTHER BUSTIN HER… I digress- people end up turning their backs on us hypocrites, and in turn reject Christ because they see how his followers treat them with disdain. I have a very hard time with this behavior because I am a very large Jerk (more like an Ass but “Christians” shouldn’t talk that way). If I don’t find value in you then I start looking for your faults and then I use those faults to separate myself from you. The insane part is that I feel my calling is as an “encourager,” my new name I’ve been given is “Barnabas,” (more on that later). So, which side of the battle is helped more when I indulge in my Jerkness?

To My/Our Aid:

Craig Gross and Jason Harper of XXXChurch.com (you remember, “The #1 Christian Porn Site” have written a new book that talks to two groups of people, those who’ve never known Jesus’ love and those who are supposed to know it but don’t show it so well (Perhaps that’s just one group of people afterall). Each chapter deals with people of a specific personality type, situation, or circumstance and reveals how Jesus loves them and how I can begin to show them love (remember “Side Hugs” only for the ladies).  The stories in each chapter are stirring, inspiring, and strangely practical. As I read I kept thinking over and over, “I could do that,” or “That would be easy I wish I’d thought of it.”

To quote the book’s introduction:

“Jesus Loves You.
The all-encompassing “you” means that the love of Jesus leaves no one out. We hope this book will compel people to see that, regardless of where they have been or what they have gone through, there is a love that endures all things.

If you’re forgotten… love finds.
If you’re broken … love mends.
If you’re an outcast … love includes.
No matter what … believe us, love works.

If you have been a Christian for a while, we want to help you review the footsteps of Jesus… rethink his approach to a hurting humanity and strive to live it out…”

From a guy some of us have heard of:

“Did you sing the song Jesus Loves Me when you were a kid? For most of us, it is so much easier to embrace Christ’s love when we’re
young. Then sin, shame, and guilt get in the way. Jesus Loves You . . . This I Know brings a powerful perspective to the biblical truth of
the undeserving, unending, beautiful love of Jesus. You’ll be inspired, motivated, and challenged to actively pursue others with the passionate love of the Savior.”
—Craig Groeschel, author of Confessions of a Pastor and Chazown

Man 2 Man

Friday, September 5th, 2008

From Bert: Its a Big Day here at the MoP!! If you pay very close attention you’ll see the new by-line above. Noel is a close friend and very large reason MenOnPurpose is what it is today. Without his encouragement I don’t think I’d have stuck with it this long. Which is why it gives me great pleasure to introduce him as a contributing member of the cast. (With Noel as an author the readership just dropped by a 10th, hopefully his contribution will attract / appeal to a larger audience.) Glad to have you here brother! Everyone, welcome Noel.

Man 2 Man

One of the purposes of MenOnPurpose.com is to provide tools to encourage men in their daily walk; real-time information.  As I come across podcasts, vidcasts, articles or blog posts I will do my best to get them to you in a timely manor.

I caught a couple of great podcasts from Focus on the Family this week.   The September 3rd and 4th shows featured Gordon Dalbey speaking on “Healing the Masculine Soul: How God Restores Men to Real Manhood.  I found the discussion encouraging and thought provoking.  The content is similar to Wild at Heart with a slightly different take.  You can surf over to the Daily Broadcast archives and give the shows a listen as well as check out some additional content:

or you can fire up itunes and search the podcast directory for Focus on the Family Daily Broadcast (yes, I had to break down and use the “i”).

Gordon Dalbey is an author and a conference speaker who has addressed audiences around the world. His books include Healing the Masculine Soul, Sons of the Father and Fight Like a Man. Gordon holds an M.Div from Harvard, an M.A. in journalism from Stanford and a B.A. in mathematics from Duke. He and his wife reside in California.  You can learn more about Gordan’s ministry at AbbaFather.com

Vision Casting: One Prayer

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Finally there is something “Christians” do that sounds cool. When I hear the term “Vision Casting” I think of the Native American practice of going on a “Vision Quest.” The result of Vision Casting isn’t that much different but you don’t have to go through all that living in the desert stuff that can be uncomfortable. In the end you are confronted with purpose and a direction to steer it. And, if you’ve never heard Craig Groeschel cast a vision for direction you’ve missed out. Craig is a good teacher, its one of the reasons I wanted to keep going to Lifechurch but when he gets passionate about something it tends to have world-wide ramifications. Take, for example, OnePrayer.com.  If you have ever wondered why we need all those denominations and 25 churches of the same type in every city and how absurd that is and what can be done about “Christian” unity, then go read the mission of One Prayer.

Just to illustrate how far ahead of the curve I was in 1995, I wrote a paper for my “Religion in Contemporary Culture” class, it was called “Denominational Reunification.” I was very impressed with the title and the grade I got on the paper. But it stopped there. Here is what can be, hundreds of churches and thousands of believers world wide worshiping and battling together to serve the rest of creation.

Here’s a link to last weeks “experience.” The illustrations of Jesus’ prayer near the end is Incredibly powerful.

Go to One Prayer.com and join the conversation…

Blue Like Jazz

by Donald Miller

Book Blue like Jazz

I finally did it, I finished a book in a week, so it was the abridged audio version, its still a book and I “read” it in a week.

Donald Miller does a great job of giving words to the feelings that somethings just aren’t right with the morays we’ve been given in the church. He opens your eyes to a world of beautiful people that don’t care about your new easter suit, they want to know if they are important enough for you to love, care about, invest in, or simply listen too.

If the modern church / “christian” is ever going to relevant to a secular world we have to stop acting like anyone who doesn’t think like us has a disease. Stop fighting about politics and start helping people downtown. Stop hanging out with the “saints” and start doing life with the “sinners”

If you’ve ever left a church service of a “traditional” church and felt like if you repeated what you just heard in the “real world” you’d be thought a freak. Then read this book and it will tell you why. Christians have a bad rep in this world because we’ve been a huge part in alienating it.

Donald doesn’t preach at anyone, he relates life through stories of interesting characters and then leaves you to form your opinion.

Blue Like Jazz conveys love and logic, but mostly love.

What is and How to: RSS Feeds

Monday, May 12th, 2008

Subscribe to RSS Feeds: Save yourself some time and improve the readership numbers on your favorite site.RSS logo

What is this logo and why do you care? This logo is a sign that you can keep up with the site’s content without having to go to the site to check for updates. Let’s say you read 3 personal blogs, keep up with your favorite sports team game results, and read a certain section of a news site everyday. RSS can bring any updates from those sites to you instead of you having to go to each of those sites. You can get the headlines or read the whole article without having to actually visit the website. There is no account needed or any personal information gathered. The programs used to collect the information being “broadcast” is called an aggregator it means “to gather in mass.” Just like you can get your email on the web (webmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, etc) or with a program installed on your local computer (Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird) you can have an online or local aggregator.

Here’s a video that explains the process, then ask your favorite nerd for more help.

A site that explains it better than I: Feed 101 h

A list of known RSS aggregators

I use my iGoogle account so I see all my headlines on my google homepage when I open my browser and when I click on an RSS feed icon I get the option to add it. Here’s a video of me subscribing to this page’s feed: rssvid

The Barbarian Way: Unleash the Untamed Faith Within

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

by Erwin Raphael McManus

The Barbarian Way

As you can tell by the title there is going to be something different about this book.

The Barbarian Way uses the model of John the Baptist as the archetypal “Christian.” John’s fight was with the religious leaders dressed in fine robes and justifying their lives by the letter of Moses Law and not by the spirit in which the laws were given. McManus points out that the church of today has become the same as it was before Christ came. The church is judgmental and segmented instead of displaying the love of Christ to those not in the church. Our fight now is as it was against those in the robes of piety.

My favorite illustration from the book is that of the title, no barbarian horde ever went into battle in single file (as the romans did). And that we as the “Christian” hordes should not be made to “get in line” or homogenized, we should be given the chance to hone and use the skills and gifts given specifically to each of us in the fight against evil and the redemption of those who find themselves lost.

10 out of 10, Awesome read, I did it in 2 settings. Probably a lot in here for a men’s discussion group probably about 3-4 weeks of topics for a weekly group.

My Turn to Jump on the ‘Green’ Bandwagon

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Being “green’ ain’t easy. You have to think about the products you buy and the trash you make, and take an inventory of the resources you consume. Then go a step further and consider the products, trash, and resources used by the manufacturers of your products and resources. It can get to be very time consuming.

On the Debate:

(This is not the point of this post, this paragraph is to give my perspective, hopefully it will make the point a little more pointed.) I’ve read the end of the story and I don’t see world ending because of too much of the wrong gas in the air. And, I know it won’t end because of flooding (caused by the melting of the ice caps). I know this because the world has been flooded before and there was a promise made to us by God that he wouldn’t destroy the earth again by flood. rb.jpgGenesis 9:13 “I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” I personally don’t think man has the ability to destroy this ear th. As for research in the area of climate change, their are as many “experts” on both sides of the issue. Some say the ice caps are melting, others say they are growing. Some say the temperature of the earth is rising and just as many say it is falling. And, I seriously doubt that Al Gore has some inside track on the subject, just a lot of free time and a need to be relevant in some way. Regardless of the side of the debate on which you fall, the story ends the same. Rev. 21:1 “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The first heaven and the first earth had passed away.”

Its a Matter of Resources:

(Here’s the point) I’m no tree hugger that’s for dang sure. For me, environmentalism is another matter altogether, a more tangible, less debatable matter of stewardship. Simply put, if I reduce the money I spend on my utilities then I can use that money in more productive areas.

I want to be off the grid. I want one of those houses that is heated and cooled passively but the sun and earth where rain is collected and used for watering the garden and grey water for the house. I’d love to go solar but that is way to expensive and building a wind generator is a close second in cost. We have an old drafty house. We spend a ton of money heating and cooling it. Before you think we go overboard the heat gets set on 62 and the air gets set around 78. I would love to seal the place up and we are trying. We both drive a lot, I traded my V8 for a V6 and we have no car payments. Other options may be an old diesel or a scooter but you can’t put a scooter on the highway. Maybe later when we’re in a better money position doing some of those things might be possible but for now we cut as many corners as we can and try to reduce what we use and reward manufactures that do the same.

Does anyone know of a practical DIY solar project or wind project or good ways to reduce dependence on the utilities or oil companies? I’ve searched online but a lot of the solutions are jankey at best. Maybe we can get together as a group and help each other find ways to lower our utility bills and reclaim some hard earned bucks.

As always, for freedom!

A Post with Some Teeth

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Scott Williams A post on Scott William’s blog, Big is the New Small, is garnering some attention. See what you think. Click Here for the Post

Are we responsible for the people we listen to? If we aren’t then that frees me up to a few more sections at the book store, video store, the magazine stand, spiritual gurus, pay-per-view channels, heck I can actually watch Oprah and not worry about her where she’s getting her advice.

If we are responsible then there is plenty to turn off. Have you ever realized that there are actually things you can’t “Unsee,” “Unhear,” or “Unthink?” Once its in there it stays.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

(In the interest of full disclosure I am one of the commentators on the post at Scott’s site. )

Your Own Personal Jesus

Friday, February 29th, 2008

I was listening to John Eldredge’s “Desire Conference” podcast and he made the point that God never delivered anyone the same way twice.
For years (centuries, in fact) people have been making “how-to” lists for people to be better Christians. This has been going on so long that we as Christians and the Church have developed our own language, dress code, and menu (I’m convinced you’ll find fruit in Jello at a potluck in China.) We have classes and procedures and forms to fill out.

God delivered in a way that was specific to the person and the situation. Moses’ outstretched staff, marching around Jericho and blowing a trumpet. Gideon blew horns too but add in the breaking of Jars and you get a whole new twist on victory. A boy and a slingshot, a body guard in an inferno, and a bald blind bodybuilder.

The point of all of this is that if God wanted us to “live a good life,” he’d have given us a top ten list and leave us to it. If you’ll remember he did that but we didn’t get the point so he perused us to the extreme and sent Jesus and the Holy Spirit to customize an exodus just for us– individually. God wants us to depend on him to show us our path, not a list of techniques. When people say, “A personal relationship with Jesus,” this is what is meant. Not some warm and fuzzy but, “Jesus guide me today, and tomorrow I’ll ask the same.”

In light of this… can/should I ask the question, “What has been effective for you in your ministry?” so I can implement it in my ministry? Or am I to be completely dependent on God’s leading? If so where does that leave us with the whole mentor and student model?

There is a ton here to unpack; do a search in iTunes for the podcast and give it a listen.
