Adam Hamilton – 2010 Global Leadership Summit

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Adam Hamilton is the founding pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. His blog “Seeing Gray”

“This is not an inspirational talk” “for some of you this may be the reason you’re here today… were going to talk about: ‘When Leaders Fall’”

Faced with the knowledge that two of his pastors were involved in an extramarital affair he had to deal continue with a service while being assisted by one of the accused…

None of us are immune
Careful to establish boundaries

Four options to handle:

  • Say nothing
  • Be evasive
  • Denounce and distance
  • Transparency, and honesty, and with compassion

Adam wanted their congregation to handle the situation with integrity.
Get ahead of the rumor mill. “Pray and don’t throw stones”
Adam preached on the grace of the gospel.

The outsiders wanted to see if they were going to see these two like the Pharisees saw the woman caught in adultery or see them as Jesus saw here.
The vast majority of the witnesses were proud of the way it was handled. Some first time visitors were impressed enough to stay.
Staff covenant * Policy of mingling with the opposite sex * If something looks like a date we count it as a date * Policies are discussed in the open so that everyone knows.

“The moment of the maybe” Playing with the temptation, wondering how life would be if I pursued the possiblility.

“Nothing good can come from telling the object of affection that you are attracted.” “Maybe becomes a yes”

It is so much easier when you don’t give up on the “Plan A” that God has given you.

Resisting Temptation:

  • Remember who you are: You are a child of God, Someones husband, daddy. a child of the King…
  • Recognize the consequences of your actions, will I feel more free or less free. Fantasize the worst options
  • Stop Drop and Pray, Rededicate yourself to God.
  • Reveal the struggle to a trusted friend James 5:6
  • Remove from the situation.

The aim of the Christian life is Sanctification: avoid sexual immorality. We’re called to model for others what it means to be like Christ

We serve a Lord that was/is a friend of sinners. Father forgive them for they know not what they do. The final word of the church must be GRACE.

Tony Dungy – 2010 Global Leadership Summit

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Interviewed by Craig Groschel, founder of http://lifechurch.tv

Tony has 7 kids (Craig has 6), he has written a book called The Mentor Leader

Your only job is to help your players play better. Leadership is about helping people get better.

I tried to develop relationships with the players to grow them. “… I think it is a biblical principle” “I was convicnced if the players believed in me that I would show them how to win.”

Craig “You were known for mentoring living a life of balance”
Dungy: Coach Nole said you can’t make football your life and we won so I knew that it could be done, a spiritual life is important so I made sure the guys got home. If the assistants were doing well with their family they’d be better for me so I would kick them out of the office. Don’t mistake hours for productivity. Don’t feel guilty going home at a decent hour.

Craig: How to find a mentor
Dungy: Leaders have to be available to mentor.
Find people you admire, if you see someone doing well ask them. Get mentored from a distance. Watch the lives of other leaders. “You can mentor someone from any level” The mentor needs to find out what you need and find out about your life.

  • It can be an informal process without a curriculum

To Mentor: Don’t be afraid to offer yourself and let someone you know that you’re available.

Who is Christ to you?
The bible says what would it profit a man if he gain the world and loose his soul? If we win the Superbowl it won’t make a difference – our right relationship to the lord is the most important thing.

Christine Caine – 2010 Global Leadership Summit

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Third Session

Christine Caine - Founder of the A21 Campaign – Anti-human Trafficking Movement

The A21 Campaign

“If what you believe about your God, then why didn’t you come sooner” – Girl kidnapped and forced into the sex trade

“We were born for this moment in the world to bring hope and love to the world.”

“Its not about situation its about purpose and what I can do. Not about the huge need but about what I can do.”

“I know what its like to live without hope but now I know what its like to live with the hope of Jesus Christ, and now that I know it is up to me to get out of bed and help with these slaves.”

“We won’t see the miracle if you avoid the risk that calls for a miracle.”

“The hope compels us to go into the dark.” The point is not to fear the world but to illuminate the darkness. Its why we are planted all over the world. If you put a child in the dark they are filled with fear but if you give the child a flash light they are no longer afraid.

Jim Collins – 2010 Global Leadership Summit

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Second Session

Jim Collins -

http://www.jimcollins.com/

  • Good is the enemy of Great
  • Greatness is not a matter of circumstance it is a matter of choice and discipline
  • If we only have great businesses we will only be prosperous, we must have great churches, schools, governments, and charities.
  • Many of the mighty fall – why do some not?
  • (story about wife’s sickness) Sick on the inside but still look strong on the outside, disease was found and cured before falling.

Five Stages of Decline – Unlike a disease these stages are self inflicted.

  1. Hubris Born of Success - Outrageous arrogance – Bad decisions taken with good intentions are still bad decisions.
Darwin Smith – Kimberly Clark – Dull, Introvert, strange – One of the greatest CEOs “I was just trying to become qualified for the job”
Herb Callaher of Southwest Airlines – from start-up to success – Arm wrestles to resolve a trademark dispute.
These leaders know that it is not about them (personality) and they never give up. The separation between level 4 leadership and level 5 is their humility. To do whatever it takes for the sake of the cause.
  2. Undisciplined persuit of more - Chasing growth over quality people will result in failure. Get the right people in the key seats and then go
  3. Denial of Risk and Peril - Not paying attention to signs of failure. Admiral Stockdale (highest ranking officer in the Hanoi Hilton) I never wavered in my faith that I would get out. I was not an optimist that died of a broken heart. “The Stockdale Paradox, “You must never confuse faith with facts.”
  4. Grasping for Salvation – Failure is imminent and they went looking for a silver bullet to fix it all. 90% of the “Good to Great” companies got their CEOs from within they didn’t reach for a savior to haul them out of the trouble. Good to Great gets better one step at a time one day at a time, success over time not at once.
  5. Capitulation - Its over, all has been squandered.
Built to Last comes from having a Reason to Endure, would you leave behind a hole that would not be filled easily by any other. Built on a reason higher than growth and money, rooted in core values that will not be compromised.

Preserve the Core -> Stimulate Progress -> Preserve the Core -> Stimulate Progress ->

Big Hairy Audacious Goals -

  1. Do your diagnostics (Jimcollins.com) Self assess do the work
  2. Count your blessings, literally, in a spreadsheet, do not stop until you have a hundred. When we begin to account all the good things that happened that we did not cause it is humbling
  3. What is your questions to statement ratio – can you double it in the next year? Invest more in being interested instead of interesting.
  4. What % of your seats are filled with fantastic people
  5. Do the “Team Up / Team Down” assessment.
  6. With key people in place what are the brutal facts
  7. Make a “Stop Doing” list
  8. Define results and show milestones
  9. Double your reach to young people by changing practice without changing core values
  10. Set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal

2010 Global Leadership Summit -Bill Hybels

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Live blogging my notes (as long as I have battery)

First Session

Bill Hybels

  • The first step of moving people from “here” to “there” is not making “there” sound great, it is to make “here” sound terrible.
  • Fantastic People- Do your people fit the culture of the organization. If a person left would you be glad, indifferent, or would it “make you vomit.” If the latter, then go to those people and make sure they know their value before they leave and you have to deal with the loss
  • Mile-Markers and Celebrations – On the journey from “here” to “there” the middle 3rd of the trip is where the trip is hard. In the beginning people are excited to be moving and at the end the finish line is in site. “Refill the ‘Vision’ bucket.” There is a 40% differential between motivated workers and unmotivated workers. Jesus reminded the disciples about “the kingdom” to inspire them on the journey
  • Whispers from God – You don’t make progress on the journey without hearing from God.
    - Through reading the Bible
    - Hearing from the Holy Spirit through remembrances and nudges (remember that any suggestion of the Spirit will meet the criteria of the Fruit of the Spirit; Galatians 5:22-23)
    - (aside from the story of Bills Life) The local church is where lost people can be found and found people can get grown up, and bored people can find purpose… and if you’re giving your life to something else then think about it.”
    - The point of hearing from God is – You’re never going to have to do this alone.
  • Don’t Quit, Step Up, Take the Risk, Apologize Now, Make the Tough Decision, Get Help, Stop Running From God, Slow Down, Show Your Heart, Let Others Lead, Feed Your Soul, Bless the Team, Make the Ask, Do Something More Impactful, Come Clean, Embody the Vision, Celebrate the Victory, Speak the Truth, Pay the Price, End the Secret, Check your Motives, Give God Your Best, Set the Pace, Get Physically Fit, Serve your Spouse and Kids

Hosanna

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I see the king of glory
Coming on the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes
The whole earth shakes

I see his love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing
The people sing

Hosanna
Hosanna
Hosanna in the highest

I see a generation
Rising up to take their place
With selfless faith
With selfless faith

I see a near revival
Stirring as we pray and seek
We’re on our knees
We’re on our knees

Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me

Break my heart from what breaks yours
Everything I am for your kingdoms cause
As I go from nothing to
Eternity

Hosanna in the highest

Rudderless

Monday, April 26th, 2010

GK Chesterton, in his book, Orthodoxy observed that previous generations of men Doubted themselves but they did not doubt truth. However, in the present age, men do not doubt themselves, they doubt the truth.
From personal experience, I would have to agree with old G.K. Doubting yourself while confident in the truth leads a man to try harder to stay the course but if the course is of no consequence then what? This backwards view of the world leads to men with a supreme confidence in a fallible being (himself) with no moral compass to guide him. Without truth he doubts if his actions have meaning or value. There is no “right” or “wrong” for which to judge his actions, desires, or treatment of others. He also has no standard by which to tell if the treatment he receives is just or unjust, leaving pain and comfort as his only judge of value. And, if pain and comfort are the only measures then he’ll always choose the opposite of pain. And then, if the only goal is to avoid pain the species will evolve elaborate defence mechanisms. Bouncing from one situation to the next and going to “battle stations” every time he thinks he’s heard a voice that crosses him. He becomes a Battleship– armored to the hilt, super defended, and able to destroy but with no rudder to guide his lethal potential.

The truth IS.

Forgetting => Fear

James 1:23-24

like a man who looks at his face in a mirror24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

One foot in the old and one foot in the new just swaying back and forth when I get too far to one side and remember to adjust. I have no memory. I can wake up and have a great outlook on God and my life but then get distracted and forget about all that is good. Oppressed by darkness without a clue on how to return to the light.

There is a great article over at XXXChurch.com today… “Fake It Till You Make It,” by Danny Bias I put more of my comments (the happy ending) there.

Porn for Christmas?

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009
There’s a great article by Kevin Outland from Mon, Dec 7th 09 over at XXXchurch.com (The #1 Christian Porn Site)

I bet you never thought of giving your kids Porn for Christmas. I’m pretty sure you’re not planning on putting the latest Porn DVD’s in your kids stocking or wrapping up a 1-year subscription to Hustler and putting that under the Christmas tree. But you still may be getting your kids porn for Christmas… full article

Kevin points out some ways to keep the devices we sometimes give at Christmas from becoming gateways to porn. However the best way to keep porn out of your kids life is for you to be in your kids life.

You were made a man on purpose– so you could protect your children from porn.

Resources contined

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Hopefully you sensed my passion for recovery in the first post.  This will be a short one because I want to share with you how God works in my life.

I have been forming this series of posts for about a month now and God has been bringing new insights and confirmations every day (even on bad days).

Today I received my Daily Eldredge email and it gave insight into addiction:

Whatever the object of our addiction is, it attaches itself to our intense desire for eternal and intimate communion with God and each other in the midst of Paradise—the desire that Jesus himself placed in us before the beginning of the world. Nothing less than this kind of unfallen communion will ever satisfy our desire or allow it to drink freely without imprisoning it and us. Once we allow our heart to drink water from these less-than-eternal wells with the goal of finding the life we were made for, it overpowers our will, and becomes, as Jonathan Edwards said, “like a viper, hissing and spitting at God” and us if we try to restrain it. . . “Addiction is the most powerful psychic enemy of humanity’s desire for God,” says Gerald May in Addiction and Grace, which is no doubt why it is one of our adversary’s favorite ways to imprison us. Once taken captive, trying to free ourselves through willpower is futile. Only God’s Spirit himself can free us or even bring us to our senses.  (The Sacred Romance , 133–34.  John Eldredge)

This is where we will be going in our path to freedom . . . God.
