Second Session
Jim Collins -
- Good is the enemy of Great
- Greatness is not a matter of circumstance it is a matter of choice and discipline
- If we only have great businesses we will only be prosperous, we must have great churches, schools, governments, and charities.
- Many of the mighty fall – why do some not?
- (story about wife’s sickness) Sick on the inside but still look strong on the outside, disease was found and cured before falling.
Five Stages of Decline – Unlike a disease these stages are self inflicted.
- Hubris Born of Success - Outrageous arrogance – Bad decisions taken with good intentions are still bad decisions.
Darwin Smith – Kimberly Clark – Dull, Introvert, strange – One of the greatest CEOs “I was just trying to become qualified for the job”
Herb Callaher of Southwest Airlines – from start-up to success – Arm wrestles to resolve a trademark dispute.
These leaders know that it is not about them (personality) and they never give up. The separation between level 4 leadership and level 5 is their humility. To do whatever it takes for the sake of the cause. - Undisciplined persuit of more - Chasing growth over quality people will result in failure. Get the right people in the key seats and then go
- Denial of Risk and Peril - Not paying attention to signs of failure. Admiral Stockdale (highest ranking officer in the Hanoi Hilton) I never wavered in my faith that I would get out. I was not an optimist that died of a broken heart. “The Stockdale Paradox, “You must never confuse faith with facts.”
- Grasping for Salvation – Failure is imminent and they went looking for a silver bullet to fix it all. 90% of the “Good to Great” companies got their CEOs from within they didn’t reach for a savior to haul them out of the trouble. Good to Great gets better one step at a time one day at a time, success over time not at once.
- Capitulation - Its over, all has been squandered.
Built to Last comes from having a Reason to Endure, would you leave behind a hole that would not be filled easily by any other. Built on a reason higher than growth and money, rooted in core values that will not be compromised.
Preserve the Core -> Stimulate Progress -> Preserve the Core -> Stimulate Progress ->
Big Hairy Audacious Goals -
- Do your diagnostics (Jimcollins.com) Self assess do the work
- Count your blessings, literally, in a spreadsheet, do not stop until you have a hundred. When we begin to account all the good things that happened that we did not cause it is humbling
- What is your questions to statement ratio – can you double it in the next year? Invest more in being interested instead of interesting.
- What % of your seats are filled with fantastic people
- Do the “Team Up / Team Down” assessment.
- With key people in place what are the brutal facts
- Make a “Stop Doing” list
- Define results and show milestones
- Double your reach to young people by changing practice without changing core values
- Set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal
